5 minutes with Isabel de Villiers

WHERE DID YOU STUDY?
I studied Fashion Design at the Tswane University of Technology (TUT) from 2006 – 2010.

WHO/WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR SEASONAL COLLECTIONS?
The shape of the womens body is always an inspiration for my collections. My latest SS/16 collection also draws inspiration from love letters in brail, which is where the idea for the laser cutting came in to play. I recently read a book about writing love letters and realized we don’t seem to do this anymore…

HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE THE LASER CUT TECHNIQUE IN YOUR LATEST SS/16 COLLECTION?
We designed the laser cut pattern ourselves and then the CCDI (Cape Craft and Design Institute) allowed us to use their laser cutting machine to create this texture onto the pre-cut panels.

WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO SEE WEARING YOUR DESIGN?
Jackie Burger. She is such an icon of mine. My client is usually a more mature woman but anyone can wear my pieces as long as they feel confident wearing it.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU COME TO YOUR STUDIO IN THE MORNING?
The first thing I do is grab a coffee at Haas (19 Buitenkant street, Cape Town) and plan my day ahead before arriving at the studio and meeting with my team.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT HERE IN HARRINGTON STREET?
Haas. They make the best coffee and at around 4 o’clock when my energy is low, I just pop down to refresh.

GIVE US A QUICK RUN DOWN OF YOUR DAY.
I wake up at 06:30, make a cup of coffee, eat a quick breakfast with my boyfriend, shower and get dressed before running out the door.
I get myself a coffee from Haas at 07:40 and am in the studio by 08:00.
I gather a quick staff meeting to make sure everyone is on the same page, on schedule and ready for the day ahead.
I split my days in two, half being time spent in the production room and the other half catching up with some admin, dropping off stock or sourcing fabrics, making sure everything is ready for the following week of production.
Lunch time is at 13:00 every day!
My team leaves at 16:30, so I finish up and wrap up the day around 17:00-17:30, get home, do washing, dishes, dinner, wine, music and relax before bed time and tea at 21:30.

WHO IS YOUR INSTAGRAM OBSESSION?
Locally: Jane Sews (@jane_sews). I love the way she styles her posts.
Internationally: Elizabeth Suzann (@elizsuzann). She is like Jane Sews’ big sister. She is a 26 year old designer in Texas and I have a massive style crush on her. I would love to take a few months to work and learn from with her one day!

WHAT IS YOUR OTHER HIDDEN TALENT THAT NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT?
I am really good at plaiting hair!
